A senior flight attendant has revealed that the mile-high club is more common than passengers might expect - but claims it's actually a 'really embarrassing situation to be in'.
On Reddit's 'Ask Me Anything' forum, user 'RomanAirLad' created a thread to answer other users' questions about his job.
And there was apparently one question at the forefront of everyone’s minds: 'Do people actually have sex on planes?'
Clearing up the confusion, the flight attendant claimed that while he wished the mile-high club was an 'urban legend', it’s surprisingly prevalent on planes.
He explained: 'As much as people fantasise about it, it’s really an embarrassing situation to be in.'
A senior flight attendant has revealed some insider secrets of the trade on Reddit's 'Ask me Anything' forum. He claimed the mile-high club is more than just an 'urban legend'
User 'eaglescout225' asked: 'What happens to these people when the plane lands?'
The original poster explained that this is assessed on a 'case by case scenario' and that a few warnings are usually issued.
If they stop, nothing happens, he wrote, adding: 'Otherwise it escalates to the captain and they’re met by security upon landing. That’s the general procedure in all airlines.’
To which the user responded: ‘OMG. I’d be horrified to do that on an airplane.’
In the thread, the flight attendant also revealed that hookup culture is rife among cabin crew staff.
One user, 'Anomaly1134', asked: 'Is hookup culture still pretty wild between pilots and stewardesses?'
To which the senior flight attendant replied: 'It is, but when a crew is recognised to be like that, I personally avoid them.'
The anonymous crew member claims the mile-high club is actually a 'really embarrassing situation to be in' and more common than passengers might expect
When asked if flight attendants sometimes offer 'sexual favours', the original poster wrote: '[That’s] absurd. Unless you're Megan Fox asking, that’s a different case.'
As well as revealing insider gossip, the senior team member shared some handy advice to passengers.
When asked his top five tips for international travel, the crew member said: 'Don't trust the seat/lavatory cleaning, it doesn't get cleaned that much.
'Use duty-free bags to store items, they won't take them away from you.
'Book aisle and window seats if you want to keep a row for yourselves, mostly if the flight isn't full. They [passengers] won't book the middle seat.'
He also advised booking tickets before peak seasonal times for the 'cheapest rates' and to avoid overeating before fights as it 'may make you feel bloated'.
Meanwhile, other Reddit users were more interested in learning how he got into the profession and how they could follow suit.
One user, 'Pierf1n', asked: ‘If I wanna be a flight attendant, what do I need to do for it?’
The original poster responded: 'This is a wonderful job if you are looking to widen your horizon and want to become part of a big community.
'If you do want to become a flight attendant, I recommend looking into your local carrier and seeing their requirements.'
He explained that there are a lot of downsides to the job, such as 'feeling physically drained from flying'. But, he said, if you have a 'well-adjusted routine and you take care of yourself', then you should 'go for it'.
